Top Tips for Cleaning Brass Jewellery

by Charlotte Newell March 25, 2023

Brass is a wonderful material that naturally tarnishes over time. Whilst some people like to embrace this evolving patina, some prefer the original bright shine which thankfully is very easy to achieve.

You can pick up many standard brass metal polishes but we are fans of household name Brasso. You should always follow the usage instructions on the product but these polishes will gently clean and restore your piece back to bright and shiny.

If you prefer a more natural homemade solution, Elsa from Brass + Bold has these excellent tips:

"-lemon juice – Take half a lemon and squeeze it into a small bowl. Dip a soft cloth into lemon juice and polish the brass surface in gentle circular motions. Wash the item with warm water and dry immediately.

-toothpaste – First wash your brass item with soap water and dry it. Then squeeze a bit of toothpaste onto a piece of soft cloth. Polish brass rubbing toothpaste on the entire surface of the piece. When done, clean and dry with a piece of paper towel or soft cloth."

Whether you want shine or patina you should always keep your jewellery stored away in a pouch or box when not in use. It's also best practice to not sleep, shower, swim or exercise whilst wearing your jewellery and you should always remove them before using any sprays or creams.
